Williamson Rocks Tour

Day-Time (Year Round)

Showcasing some of the best views in Mingo County's only city, this tour explores Death Rock, Picnic Rock, and Castle Rock! This tour typically lasts 2-3 Hours and is perfect for a shorter morning or afternoon trip. Very short hiking is required at each destination to visit each rock formation.

The Hornet Ridge
Tour

Specifically designed for riders staying in the Matewan, West Virginia area, this tour travels the historic and very scenic ridges toward Phelps, Kentucky. A meal-stop can be requested at "Hornet's" in Phelps (the Krazybread is a MUST!)

Death Rock

Day-Time (Year-Round)

Williamson's most famous hiking destination has "wowed" locals and visitors alike throughout history. Featuring a multi-state view, the location is fantastic year-round with each season offering unique scenes.

Difficulty: Moderate

Castle Rock & 
Picnic Rock Combo!

Day-Time (Year Round)

This 2-Mile (round-trip) hike takes folks to the location of an old radio tower that sat high above the city of Williamson. While views can be better in the fall/winter and early spring, Picnic Rock is the perfect place to take a lunch and enjoy the mountains!

Note: This hike is a combo including stops at both Castle & Picnic Rocks.

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 3.8 Miles

Castle Rock

Day Time-(Year Round)

Certainly one of the more unique rock formations in the Tug Valley Area is Castle Rock. The hike is one of the easiest offered by W.E.S. and is a great introduction to exploring this area. 

Note: This hike can be combined with Picnic Rock due to close proximity. See our "Combo" Option below for both.

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 2.6 Miles

Shoe Rock

Day-Time (Spring, Fall, Winter)

Hidden along the ridge overlooking West-Williamson is Shoe Rock. This less traveled destination is not accessible in summer months but provides hikers with a unique experience. 

Difficulty: Moderate/Hard

Picnic Rock

Day-Time (Year Round)

About the Guide

Join veteran trail-rider and professional photographer, Wes Wilson, on professionally-guided expeditions throughout the Tug River Valley and beyond! Whether you're riding the trails, hiking, or kayaking, Wes' offers endless opportunities for adventure while in the area. 

Wes has managed his first business, Wes Wilson Photography, since 2012 in Williamson, West Virginia. Serving as a free-lance photographer for local newspapers, his career has given him the opportunity to cover incredible events around the world. 

 

Notably, Wes has photographed the ESPN Winter X Games (Aspen, Colorado), Greenbrier Classic PGA Tour, and currently serves as House Photographer at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville, Kentucky. While at the A.W.A., he's had the opportunity to photograph Aaron Lewis, Black Label Society, Brad Paisley, Marshall Tucker Band, REO Speedwagon, Travis Tritt, Alice Cooper,
Ace Frehley, and many more nationally known artists.
